Barth Reception in Britian

D. Densil Morgan

Hardback 2010-06-10

It is an accepted fact that the work of Karl Barth was a formative influence on western theological developments during the twentieth century. From the initial impact made by the Rmerbrief (1919) to the multi-volumed Kirchliche Dogmatik (1932-67) (E.T. Church Dogmatics (1936-75), Barth's contribution influenced profoundly the course of theological thinking in Europe and beyond. Following a period of comparative neglect after his death in 1968, Barth's centenary in 1986 marked the beginnings of a renewed assessment of his work, and since then interest in his life, thought and overall position has escalated rather than declined. This is particularly true of scholarship in Britain and the United States. A detailed account of the reception of Barth's work in Britain has yet to be attempted. This proposal aims at filling that gap.
