The present volume sketches the basics of moral theology: the meaning of life and of action, the centrality of the person, sources in Scripture and history, the power to transform character and culture, the confrontation with "the mystery of evil", and the law of the Gospel fulfilled in grace.
In an era when manuals are out of fashion, he here takes up the ambitious challenge of writing a manual of moral theology for the new millennium. Encouraged by his mentor, the late Bernard Haering, and inspired by the vision of Vatican II, he aims in this work, not only to reflect in faith on the implications of the Word of God for the shape of Christian life, but also to form Christians to be agents of goodness in the Church and in the world. His objective is 'to show how holiness transfuses and permeates every aspect of living' (vol 1, 38). The backdrop to all this, following the lead given by 'Gaudium et Spes', is the impact on contemporary human experience of history and the diverse cultures of today's world.
Kennedy does not target any specific audience for his manual, so it may be presumed to be for anyone interested in morality and moral issues. Although he writes very much within the Roman Catholic, indeed the Thomistic, moral tradition, representative contributions on some issues form other Churches and from a wide variety of sources are frequently canvassed. Here the author displays considerable erudition. His volumes follow the general outline of the moral parts of the 'Summa' of St Thomas Aquinas, as will be seen from a perusal of the contents. At the end of each volume there is an extensive bibliography, a fair percentage of which however is not in English.
(Outline of the books' contents) Volume 1 deals with fundamental moral theology in four sections. The first lays the ultimate foundation of Christian morality firmly in God and goes on to develop the theme of its proximate foundation in an integral understanding of the human person. The second section gives an overview of the sources of Christian morality in Scripture and the history of moral theology. The third section takes up the essential elements of Christian morality: human action, conscience, character, moral education and virtue, and finally sin and the mystery of evil. The volume is rounded off by a consideration of the moral dimensions of the Gospel: law and grace, which lead to reflections on the Lordship of Christ, the Church and the Kingdom.
