to read only the even chapters because I really loved the historical timeline, but I stopped the contemporary one chapter (the odd chapters) one chapter too soon. When I went back to read the contemporary, I found it also had a great twist and sucked me in until the very end. If you have read 'The Red Canary' you'll know who the historical couple are, but you don't need to have read that. If you have read 'Undercurrent of Secrets' you'll know the hero of the contemporary plotline, but again, this is a standalone book. So, you don't need to have read either of the others.
