Richard Baxter (Historymakers Series)

Richard Baxter

Paperback 1998-08-31

Baxter was one of the most influential of the Puritan pastors and authors. He preached to Oliver Cromwell and Charles II and was imprisoned by the notorious Judge Jeffreys, whom Baxter obviously exasperated.

During his pastorate Baxter progressively taught 800 families over a year on Monday nights, and acted as an informal judge on Thursdays. The effect on the community was such that 'the jails in Kidderminster were empty' at this time - yet he considered all this as secondary to his writing.

Baxter's autobiography is fascinating as you get an insight into the Puritan mind and also a survey of society.
