Chiasm is a literary or rhetorical device in which the structure of one phrase is reversed in a parallel or answering phrase, the two pivoting on a central idea. Brouwer decided to use it as the organizing principle of his reading of the passage when he noticed that the repetition of words and themes seems balanced in a contrived way, and that there appeared to be a kind of enveloping expression of Jesus' care in the discourses that begin and end it.
