King James Version (KJV) Bibles

The King James Version (KJV), first published in 1611, remains one of the most influential Bible translations in history. Commissioned by King James I of England, it was produced by a team of more than 50 scholars who worked to create a text faithful to the original Hebrew and Greek while also suitable for public reading in the church. The KJV’s literary style, contemporary with Shakespeare, has shaped the English language and inspired generations of readers with its majestic cadence and poetic phrasing. While later discoveries of biblical manuscripts have led to more recent translations, the KJV continues to be cherished for its accuracy, reverence, and historical significance. Many believers treasure the KJV not only for personal devotion and worship but also for its enduring impact on Christian heritage. It remains a timeless witness to the power of God’s Word, honoured for both its spiritual and literary legacy.

Frequently asked questions

Is the King James Version accurate?
Yes. The KJV is a word-for-word translation that follows the Hebrew and Greek closely, and its New Testament is based on the Textus Receptus. The main challenge for modern readers is the English. Some words have changed meaning over 400 years. In 1 Thessalonians 4:15, "prevent" meant "go before", not "stop". A good study Bible or a KJV with footnotes helps with these.
What's the difference between the KJV and NKJV?
The NKJV is a modern update of the KJV, published in 1982. It follows the same manuscripts and keeps much of the familiar wording, so "His only begotten Son" stays in John 3:16. It replaces words that have dropped out of use. "Thee" and "thou" become "you", and "charity" in 1 Corinthians 13 becomes "love". Readers who love the KJV's sound but want easier reading often choose the NKJV.
What is a 1611 King James Bible?
A 1611 edition reproduces the King James Bible as it was first printed, with the original spelling and the Apocrypha included between the Old and New Testaments. Most KJV Bibles sold today use a later standardised text with modern spelling, based on revisions completed in 1769. The translation is the same. A 1611 edition is for readers who want the text exactly as it first appeared.
Does the KJV include the Apocrypha?
The original 1611 King James Bible did, but most KJV Bibles printed today contain only the 66 books of the Protestant canon. If you want the Apocrypha, choose a KJV edition labelled "with Apocrypha". These include 1611 reprints and several reference Bibles.
Which KJV Bible should I buy?
Start with how you'll use it:

For reading without strain: our large print and giant print KJV Bibles, one of the biggest parts of the range.
For study: a KJV study Bible, with notes that explain both the meaning and the older wording.
For tracing themes: a reference Bible such as a chain-reference or Cambridge edition.
For carrying: a compact or thinline edition.
For churches and giving away: pew and gift Bibles.
