Throughout his book he argues that “the scientific evidence for our shared ancestry with the apes is so overwhelming – p 240” that both ‘old-earth creationism’ which he defines as the view “that the earth is very old, as the scientific data indicate, but that God has intervened in a miraculous way at various points in evolutionary history, particularly in the creation of the genetic code, the first cells, the main ‘kinds’ of animal and in the creation of humankind – p 239” and of course ‘young-earth creationism’ are “incompatible with the current scientific understanding of human evolution, since they deny any continuity between the animal world and humanity – p 240”.
Don’t worry, Denis Alexander reassures his readers that “As it happens, there are no biblical reasons for holding to either model D [‘old-earth creationism’] or E [‘young-earth creationism’], provided we do not start trying to read the biblical text as a scientific textbook, rather than as the theological text that it is intended to be, and provided miracles are not invoked for events that the Genesis text itself does not describe as miraculous. – p 240-241”
Of course, such a view requires reinterpreting or denying the meaning of the many texts throughout Scripture to bring it into alignment with the current prevailing scientific view on origins and evolution. A case in point is his claim “there is no geological evidence for a global flood, and the language of Genesis that refers to ‘every living thing on the face of the earth’ being ‘wiped out’, may very well simply refer to that ‘world’ with which Noah and his family were familiar. – p 242”
Denis Alexander hopes to persuade the reader that there is no need to choose between creation or evolution by redefining ‘creation’ to mean evolution.
