As the daughter of Viscount Aynsley, Caroline Hatherleigh knows every rule of society--and she's always followed them precisely. But when she visits south Devonshire and encounters a fossil-hunting scientist and his sister, her assumptions about what is right are shaken. Questions she has never considered about the importance of friendship...

As the daughter of Viscount Aynsley, Caroline Hatherleigh knows every rule of society--and she's always followed them precisely. But when she visits south Devonshire and encounters a fossil-hunting scientist and his sister, her assumptions about what is right are shaken. Questions she has never considered about the importance of friendship and faith suddenly confront her--and her comfortable understanding about how the world works is thrown off balance. What if God wants to be the center of her life, rather than merely a social obligation?

Gideon Kirby loves science, and hunting down proof of past lives is a joy he won't willingly give up. But his scientific leanings are being challenged both by his personal beliefs and by local smugglers in the Devonshire countryside. And every day his sister's illness becomes more desperate, her care growing more demanding. Adding a viscount's daughter to the mix is a complication Gideon never expected--especially since he must stay far away from this young woman he's falling for in order to protect his beloved sister's secret.

When a mysterious stranger visits the village, that secret will be exposed, no matter how Gideon fights. Then tragedy strikes in a smugglers' cave. And the threat of scandal may lead to broken hearts and passionless propriety. Will the shaky bond these two have nurtured be strong enough to overcome their differences--or will the trust they've withheld from each other tear three lives apart?

    A good read

If you like high intensity that is sustained through the whole book, this isn't for you. There are intense scenes that grab one's interest, but there are also plenty of quiet scenes. I got a little bored and skipped to the end, but the end revealed a development that had me going back to finish reading the middle. It was worth going back, so if you find things a little slow, preserve a little longer, the good bit is coming. This (as far as I can tell) starts somewhere in the timeline of The Making of Mrs. Hale. I didn't read that book and struggled at the start of this one due to a lack of interest in whatever had happened in Mrs. Hale's book. I got interested when the hero and heroine were finally in the same town to meet. In the quiet scenes, their very proper dialogue (which is authentic to the time) got a bit stiff for me. However, I still gave this book four stars because the good scenes were very good, and I enjoyed the heroine's journey to God. The spiritual bits were very well written, not too deep but also not skimmed over. In the words of goldilocks, just right.

    Regency romance

This was a great Regency romance. I loved the fact that it covered topics I'd never read in a regency book before. I read this book with my book club and really enjoyed it. I also love to read books by great Australian authors.

    Worth reading

This book pulled me along. I love the Regency details and considering the challenges of the cultural norms of the day. \\nThe science was fun and I loved the spiritual awakening for Caroline. \\nRecommended for lovers of Regency and Jane Austen but who love Christian fiction too.

    Inspirational Story

A wonderfully written historical and profound regency novel, with some unforgettable characters. This story of Caroline's visit to her Grandmother, to a small country town on the Devonshire coast, is where an inspiring friendship is born between her and the Kirby family. This story has the right amount of tension, suspense and romance to get you turning the pages to find out what happens. Thoroughly enjoyed where this regency era story took me on with such rich detail of that era that it will capture your heart and imagination. A moving story of faith and heart.

    Regency romance and fossils

In this Regency romance, Caroline Hatherleigh is banished to the seaside to stay with her Grandmother for seven weeks. However, things turn out more interesting than she thought they would when she meets undergroundologist Gideon and his sister Emma. Gideon hopes to find a fossiled skeleton to rival the one discovered by Mary Anning (a true historical figure). However, Emma is ill, and all is not as it seems. Can Caroline and Gideon work through their issues and society's expectations in order to find love? This was a really interesting spin on the typical Regency romance. I liked the different layers to the story, including the historical aspects of the fossil hunt, and other issues such as family violence and what you would do to protect those you love. Well-written and an enjoyable read.
