To be honest, it is more than a little mystery. She schemed her way to Chicago to discover the mother she barely remembered. As for romancewell, with the help of her grandmother and three great aunts, that is coming along nicely as well--perhaps too well. Each of her relatives--including her saintly grandmother--seems to have a separate agenda for her.

In the course of a summer, Violet's world will open wide before her eyes. But in the wake of discovery, she must find a way to determine which path--and which man--will ultimately be the right lifetime choice for her.

When Violet Hayes ventures to Chicago during the time of the World's Fair, her one goal is to find her mother, who has been missing from her life since she was nine. Naive, impressionable, and highly imaginative (having secretly ingested a diet of romance novels and true crime stories at school), Violet stays in Chicago under the care of her grandmother and her three great aunts. It is here that her perspectives on life are opened as she is exposed to the world about her--from high society to the poor immigrant families; from the suffragette movement to the security of a suitable marriage match. As Violet contemplates what course her life will take, she will discover the missing parts of her family's past--and, ultimately, Violet will discover herself.

    Marvellous!

This is seriously my favourite romantic novel. You have no idea who Violet will fall for, which is such a nice change from standard romantic fiction - and closer to real life. Over the book you end up falling for the one she chooses but you don't notice that you are, just like her. One of the best kissing scenes in fiction also. Read it.

    Very intriguing and entertaining

A friend of mine recommended Lynn Austin and I started with this as a way of settling into her style before reading Bible-based books. It was perfect for just that. I thoroughly enjoyed this book!!! Lynn is such a clever author. She used humour throughout yet was able to convey deep emotions and keep the story going. \\r\\n\\r\\nAs to the story itself, I found it very difficult to relate to Violet to begin with. She was immature and as the story progresses has 4 suitors to choose from!!! However she grows immensely and I thoroughly enjoyed it in the end. I look forward to reading more of Lynn Austin's books. Please write reviews of her work when you've read her to spread the word!\\r\\n\\r\\nBe blessed :)

Don't give up on Violet - I nearly did

I was a bit taken aback by the protagonists' lack of maturity in the first couple chapters that I nearly gave the book up. Then there was a reference to her grandmother's """"woeful Jesus eyes"""" (on page 48 of my edition) which I found to be irreverent and unnecessary. Still I persevered and was glad that I did. Violet grows up a lot in the novel and her journey is quite refreshing. Her aunts are the most endearing characters and Violet's bloomers were laugh-out-loud funny. Once I was into this book enjoyed it immensely.

    A Delightful Read

A Proper Pursuit' contains the humorous adventures of a young woman as she explores into the mysteries of her past and future with a vivid imagination and a growing understanding of God's plans for her life. It has quickly become a favourite among my group of friends. I highly recommend this book to any woman looking for a delightful read with a great message.

A mystery and a Romance in one

I loved this book! Lynn Austin is a favourite historical author of mine, and this book is probably my favourite book of hers. It is set in the late 1800's and combines both a mystery (that I did not work out easily, which is good) and a romance (that left me hanging until the last pages but gave me the ending I wanted!) This is the perfect book for anyone who loves smart historical romance.
