Frequently asked questions

What is a giveaway Gospel?

A giveaway Gospel is a single book of the Bible, Matthew, Mark, Luke or John, printed as a small, low-cost paperback or booklet so it’s easy to hand out. They’re designed for people who are new to the Bible or curious about Jesus. Some editions add a short explanation of the Christian message, reading notes or a guide to what to read next.

Which Gospel is best to give away?

Each gospel serves a slightly different purpose and would suit a different reader. John was written so that readers might believe in Jesus (John 20:31). Mark is the shortest and moves quickly, which is why it is often recommended as the first gospel to read. Luke is an account by a historian who was around when Jesus walked the earth that includes the Christmas story, so it’s often given at Christmas. Matthew shows how Jesus fulfils the Old Testament, which helps readers who know a little of the Bible already.

Which Bible translation is best for outreach?

For people reading the Bible for the first time, easy-to-read translations such as the CEV, NLT or ERV are a good fit, and the ICB is written for children. The NIV balances accuracy and readability. The ESV, CSB and NASB follow the original wording more closely, and the KJV suits readers who love traditional language. Anglicised editions use British spelling, which matches Australian English.

What does Black Letter Edition mean?

A Black Letter Edition prints the words of Jesus in black, like the rest of the text. In a red letter edition, Jesus’ words are printed in red so they stand out. The Bible text itself is the same in both, so it’s simply a design choice. Many giveaway Gospels are black letter editions.
