Respectable Sins (With Discussion Guide)

It's not easy to write a practical Christian book whose purpose is to convict the reader of their sins and repent for 2 reasons:\\n1. No one """"likes"""" being told their sins\\n2. Practical books are often too simplistic and little more than to-do lists. \\n\\nHowever, Jerry overcomes these difficulties with this book """"Respectable Sins"""". He is a very careful writer and gives off a pastoral feeling, that he is with you and on your side, not trying to condemn you but help you. This is extremely important in a book like this. He is succinct and gets to the heart of many accepted sins that permeate Christian culture. Jerry doesn't hold back in his criticism of contemporary Christian culture, but in doing this, he does it with humility and understanding. \\n\\nI think this book has great value because it would be much harder to be told these things by someone you know in real life, than through a book (by the power of the Holy Spirit), as our pride and our guard is lowered since we are not being confronted in person. So this book is humbling and it would be of great benefit to read this individually or as a group.

Book is well bound, easy to read and handle. There are many subtle sins we have come to accept as acceptable. It is good to be reminded of those. However, the closer we walk with God in His Word, the more we become aware of the things we need to die off. Leaving food for thought.

We studied this book at bookclub and found it led to a lot of discussion. The study questions in the back came in handy. It raises the point that a lot of Christians don't think of themselves as sinners as they don't commit bad' sins (murder, adultery, etc). It is a good book with a lot of truth, just remember that there is now no condemnation. . . I think the purpose of this book is to highlight how sinful we are so that we can appreciate the depth of God's grace and to help us be less judgemental of others' sins.
