Set adrift on the tides of fate by the deaths of her parents and left wanting answers, Laura Callaway now lives with her uncle and his disapproving wife in North Cornwall. There she feels like a castaway, always viewed as an outsider even as she yearns to belong.
While wreckers search for valuables along the windswept Cornwall coast -- known for its many shipwrecks but few survivors -- Laura searches for clues to the lives lost so she can write letters to next of kin and return keepsakes to rightful owners. When a man is washed ashore after a wreck, Laura acts quickly to protect him from a local smuggler determined to destroy him.
As Laura and a neighbor care for the survivor, they discover he has curious wounds and, although he speaks in careful, educated English, his accent seems odd. Other clues wash ashore, and Laura soon realizes he is not who he seems to be. Despite the evidence against him, the mysterious man might provide her only chance to discover the truth about her parents' fate. With danger pursuing them from every side, and an unexpected attraction growing between them, will Laura ever find the answers she seeks?

Laura Callaway daily walks the windswept Cornwall coast, known for many shipwrecks but few survivors. She feels like a castaway, set adrift on the tides of fate by the deaths of her parents and left wanting answers. Now living with her parson uncle and his parsimonious wife in North Cornwall, Laura is viewed as an outsider even as she yearns to belong somewhere again.
When ships sink, wreckers scour the shore for valuables, while Laura searches for clues to the lives lost. She has written letters to loved ones and returned keepsakes to rightful owners. She collects seashells and mementos, and when a man is washed ashore, she collects him too.
As Laura and a neighbor care for the castaway, the mystery surrounding him grows. He has abrasions and a deep cut that looks suspiciously like a knife wound, and he speaks in careful, educated English, yet his accent seems odd. Other clues wash ashore, and Laura soon realizes he is not who he seems to be. Their attraction grows, and while she longs to return the man to his rightful home, evidence against him mounts. With danger pursuing them from every side, will Laura ever find the answers and love she seeks?

I'm a sucker for sweeping historical fiction particularly those set in atmospheric Cornwall. This one had touches of Poldark and Dilly Court's Rockwood Chronicles so if you enjoy those, you will love this book! I certainly did. Perfect way to while away the hours with a beautiful story, sweeping landscape and wholesome themes. While the characters ' faith is alluded to several times, it is not in any way ""preachy"" the way some non-believers might find. I think even non-believers who enjoy historical fiction, Pollack and Dilly Court's will love A Castaway in Cornwall.

Fascinating!
This book has such a unique setting and really set my imagination on fire. I myself love beach combing searching for what I might find washed up on the shores. It must have been such an exciting time to live in, where you could search the shores for wreckage from actual shipwrecks, which evidently was quite a common occurrence. I loved that Laura was able to find her prince charming in the same way she found her other treasures- washed upon the shores of her beloved Cornish coast. I also loved that her aunt received a comeuppance of sorts too. Julie Klassen has a remarkable writing style and this book is no exception!

Historical Fiction
A castaway on cornwall by Julie Klassen is another historical fiction books. I was initially intrigued by the beginning and the storyline about Laura was interesting as it was well written with many twists and turns. I like that the story line is realistic and has relatable characters.
