"Biblically inspired wisdom on the challenges and opportunities of growing older" Vocational discernment, says R. Paul Stevens, is a lifelong process and it takes on even more significance in later life. In "Aging Matters" Stevens argues that our calling does not end with formal retirement; to the contrary, he maintains that we should keep on working, if possible, till life's end. Stevens delves into matters of calling, spirituality, and legacy in retirement, showing that we must continue to discern our vocation as we grow older to provide meaningful engagement for the rest of our lives. He reframes "retirement" as a time of continued calling and productivity and points to biblical wisdom about turning aging into an extraordinarily fruitful season of life. Aging Matters offers informed perspective, guidance, hope and a powerful Christian vision for personal and spiritual growth to older people."

    Essential Reading

As I enter the sixth decade of my life, I am increasingly conscious that I am aging. Hence, when I came across R. Paul Stevens' book,it appealed to me. I read it and have learned much from it. The book discusses important issues like what is aging, how we want to age, vocation in old age, the vices and virtues of aging, spirituality, living a legacy, and so on. It has both challenged and inspired me to age gracefully, usefully, and spiritually. To borrow from the title of a book which Stevens cite frequently, as I age, I'd like to see myself becoming a sage. Stevens also observed that most senior ministries in local churches are just ministries to seniors. How about transforming senior ministries to ministries by seniors since they have so much to offer? Local churches, as well as our society, should go back to the mindset of ancient societies in which the aged were held in high regard, esteemed for their experience and wisdom. An important book indeed which should be essential reading.
