This thoughtful study skillfully integrates biblical and systematic theology and then applies both to the day-to-day ministry of the church. Combining thoroughness with accessibility, this is a wonderful resource for anyone who wants to be a better teacher of the Bible. 192 pages, from Crossway.

Capitol Hill Baptist Church associate pastor Michael Lawrence contributes to the IXMarks series as he centers on the practical importance of biblical theology to ministry. He begins with an examination of a pastor's tools of the trade: exegesis and biblical and systematic theology. The book distinguishes between the power of narrative in biblical theology and the power of application in systematic theology, but also emphasizes the importance of their collaboration in ministry.

Having laid the foundation for pastoral ministry, Lawrence uses the three tools to build a biblical theology, telling the entire story of the Bible from five different angles. He puts biblical theology to work in four areas: counseling, missions, caring for the poor, and church/state relations. Rich in application and practical insight, this book will equip pastors and church leaders to think, preach, and do ministry through the framework of biblical theology.

Essential intro into practical Biblical Theology

This emphasis of this book is that the cross of Christ stands at the centre of the Bible and that the entire Bible must be read in light of that story, the story of salvation. Lawrence first carefully presents the tools that are necessary for Biblical Theology, which are somewhat technical, but are invaluable for learning how to do Biblical Theology yourself. He then presents the entire story of the Bible five times over, but each time coming from a different angle, yet always ending at the foot of the cross. Following this, he shows how Biblical Theology practically impacts the Church and why it is so important. This book is absolutely essential for anyone in ministry, anyone trying to understand Biblical Theology or for anyone seeking a deeper knowledge and love of the Bible. Highly recommended.
