For people who enjoy western stories this one has some fun dynamics and conversations between the main characters. There are also some really sad bits too. Generally I found that the storyline tended to drag a bit and found it an easy book to put down. It is written well though.

Fun
It was nice to catch up with Anne Tillerton, who we met in the previous books in Regina Jennings' Ladies of Caldwell County series. Anne isn't exactly your typical historical romance heroine - she's strong, forthright and fun to watch. And yet, she's vulnerable, looking for love, and prone to acting before she's thought through all the consequences, which makes for more fun and adventure. Nick Lovelace, who we've also met before, is the man with just enough patience, kindness and pure love to take Anne on and together they change each other's lives for the better. Although it adds some interesting backstory, it isn't essential to have read the other books in the series first, so don't wait to enjoy this easy to read historical romance.

Not what I was expecting
I find it hard to empathise with a person who shoots to kill. Since Anne is a crack shot, surely she could have shot her husband in the leg and arm and given him time to repent, rather than dispatching him to hell. But this book would appeal to readers of Westerns who don't give a moment's thought to the eternal destiny of the """"bad guys"""". Definitely not a light, funny read, for thoughtful people.

Starting with book 3. . . .
Not sure that picking up the 3rd book to start with is a good idea but sadly, due to no series title on the book - Ladies of Caldwell County (?) - this is where my introduction to Regina Jennings has started. \\r\\n\\r\\nI was impressed with Nicholas, Nick, from early in the story, by the end I was so happy . . . But I get ahead of myself! Anne is hiding from the world and from her past but in trying to avoid becoming the outposts cook she finds herself with a baby to look after and a society with expectations to try and fit into once again. \\r\\n\\r\\nNick isn't always her knight in shining armour but he ends up with character qualities that are shiny, appealing to any woman. In his struggle for intergity and respect and a lively hood not lost can he be someone he can live with and be able to tell Anne he loves her . . . . \\r\\n\\r\\nI laughed, I ached, I was close to tears . . . Be ready to be delighted with this story and its little twists. \\r\\n

Must read
This has been such a lovely book. I laughed out loud in some parts and wiped a tear away in another. My heart felt so sore for Anna's sake, her past following her no matter how much she tries to make a new life for herself. My favorite character though was our hero Nick. I loved his wit and compassion. I also loved the portrayal of a man of conviction that does what he has to even if he knows that everything he worked for will be lost because of doing the right thing. I did also appreciate the fact that our author didn't just glanced over his decision but showed his struggle to stand by his conviction. Will I continue to love and serve God if I end up losing what I want because I obey Him? That is the question and it was beautifully tackled in this story.
