    relevant and practical

The bulk of this book is focused on criticising various practices within some parts of the charismatic movement: prophecies, tongues, etc. JM's view on these practices is, for the most part, negative; this is perhaps unsurprising to all parties in the debate. JM is forthcoming about his view, and supports his claims with numerous examples, which makes obvious the practical relevance of the discussion. Though all of this book is worth reading, the first and last content chapters might be of greatest interest to readers (regardless of their view), in which JM discusses the questions of whether experience is a legitimate source of theological knowledge and how we should approach charismatics.

    A favourite book

I loved reading this book. It helps me to defend my position on the charismatic movement using Bible verses. I reccommend this to all readers who would like to help others see deception surrounding the miraculous gifts of the spirit.

    Challenging

Macarthur has become the popular voice against 'the charismatics'. His approach, while brash at times, follows reliable hermeneutics. For any Pentecostals with concerns about questionable practices, this book is good go-to for a solid perspective from 'the other side'.

    Helpful critique

Theological appraisals of charismatic theology are rare, making this a helpful book. He addresses both biblical and theological issues, and aspects of the actual movement and practices. Unfortunately what this means is sometimes the biblical commentary is not as detailed as one might wish. Overall helpful and stimulating.
