"In the biblical drama of the living God's works in creation and redemption," writes Cornelis Venema, "no theme is more lustrous than that of God's gracious intention to enjoy communion with humans who bear his image and whose lives have been broken through sin."This collection of Venema's essays summarizes and defends a broad consensus view of the doctrine of the covenants in the history of Reformed theology and clarifies several areas of dispute. Venema argues that (1) the distinction between a pre-fall covenant of works and a post-fall covenant of grace is an integral feature of a biblical and confessionally Reformed understanding of the history of redemption; (2) the distinction between a pre-fall covenant of works and a post-fall covenant of grace is necessary to preserve the sheer graciousness of God's redemption in Jesus Christ; and (3) the doctrines of covenant and election are corollary doctrines, not opposed to each other, but mutually defining.

    Excellent

This is a very thorough treatment of covenant theology. It addresses before and after the fall, the Mosaic Economy, and issues regarding infant baptism and the children of believers. It refers to a variety of """"confessions"""", and has some excellent material from Herman Bavinck. \\nIt also deals with some recent discussions on these issues, where Venema points out the errors and dangers of straying from foundational reformed tradition. \\nMost chapters are fairly easy to read, however, some more technical can be skipped without losing the flow. \\nI would recommend this book to any serious Bible student wanting to deepen there knowledge. \\n

    Covenant Theology

A fully indexed book of 435 pages on covenant theology by a very able scholar and theologian. \\r\\nI primarily bought it because it has 2 very lengthy chapters on the Covenant of Works and the Mosaic Economy and republication something that has been hotly debated for the last 40 or so years in American reformed circles. I also enjoyed his chapter on baptism and covenant children. It is a hefty tome that will only appeal probably to the initiated but well worth the read for anyone contemplating Covenant Theology. The book is divided into 3 parts and the last part deals with the Federal Vision another controversal issue faced by the Presbyterian and Reformed churches in America. So overall Dr Venema has written a very timely book on current issues facing the reformed church.
