Will their meddling expose her mission and keep Lila Seaton from being recovered?

When Matthew Cook decided to be a missionary, he never expected to be sent only a short train ride away. While fighting against corruption of all sorts, Matthew hears of a baby raffle being held to raise funds for a children's home. He'll do what he can to stop it, but he also wants to stop the reckless Miss York, whose bad judgment consistently seems to be putting her in harm's way.

Calista doesn't need the handsome pastor interfering with her investigation, and she can't let her disguise slip. Her job and the life of a young lady depend on keeping Matthew in the dark.

    entertaining

I'm normally don't really like this genre (not sure what to name it, historical comedy and romance?!) because I find it all a bit too silly. But I was surprised to find myself getting sucked into this story, eagerly turning each page to find out what happened next! While I suspect that Calista is not a historically accurate portrayal of a 19 century female detective, she is certainly a fun and quirky character. I was genuinely engaged in the mystery, trying to figure out the clues. If you like Rachel McMillan's """"Herrington and Watts"""" series, then you will like this one.

    Female Pinkerton

I really wanted to like this book but struggled to finish it, which surprised me given how many of this author's books I've absolutely loved. I think it was mostly because I didn't connect at all with either the setting or the characters. That said, it was well written and full of the same sweet moments, witty conversations and depth Regina Jennings is known for, so if you enjoy late 1800s American history, and are fascinated by the Pinkertons and the idea of a female spy, you'll likely still really enjoy it. Just not for me.

    Amazing!

Wow! This book was AMAZING! I can't even begin to describe how much I loved it! It had me laughing out loud, nail-bitingly anxious and my heart beating in all the right places. \\n Once again, Author Regina Jennings has created an incredible world to open your book and get lost in (no pun intended, lol) and I'm reminded why I need to make sure to keep up with her books! She is quickly becoming one of my favorite go-to authors (especially if I'm in need of a few good laughs mixed in with my reading!) \\n Courting Misfortune is a beautiful blend of mystery, romance, comedy and a lesson in learning to follow God's direction for your life, even when it seems it's in the opposite direction of what it ought to be!\\n If you're a fan of Ms. Jennings' previous works, you're sure to be thrilled with this latest addition to her collection! I, for one, will be anxiously awaiting the next installation in her Joplin Chronicles series and snatching up a copy as soon as humanly possible to continue this adventure!

    So enjoyable

This book was so enjoyable to read. I loved reading of the history of the effect that early mining had on the community and the reminder that we can make a difference for Jesus one person at a time. I loved the interaction between Calista and Matthew and all her relations. There were funny and inspiring moments. This is a story that encourages and delights. \\n
