The prophet Nehemiah's cousin can speak numerous languages, keep complex accounts, write on rolls of parchment and tablets of clay, and solve great mysteries. There is only one problem: she is a woman.

In her early childhood years, Sarah experienced the death of her mother and her father's subsequent emotional distance and she came to two conclusions: that God does not care about her, and that her accomplishments are the measure of her worth - the measure of her self.

Sarah, the talented scribe and cousin to Nehemiah, is catapulted into the center of the Persian court, working too many hours, rubbing elbows with royalty, and solving intrigues for the Queen. Ironically, it isn't failure but success that causes Sarah to lose her only source of external validation. Sarah soon learns that she has something of worth to offer beyond her ability with languages and sums - her very being proves to be a blessing to others.

    Not so plain

What a great book about how people perceive one another. Sarah only sees her worth in what she does but not in who she is. While Darius only sees himself through the eyes of who he is. This makes for an interesting story woven around the meaning of true love, and yes true love is real just read Tessa's book Harvest of rubies but be sure to get the follow on book Harvest of gold you'll be glad you did.

    Awesome read

I loved the lessons from the Psalms as they made me think of where I could change my approach to God.

    A great story!

Another great story from Tessa Afshar. I love how she delves into the Bible times and makes it come alive. She's a very talented story-teller who has clearly done her research well.

    Great book!

Loved this book! The main character is very relatable! She goes through a journey to learn about God and how her relationship with him works. Set in a beautiful, colourful, changing scenery- the author is very engaging and has me off in a new world in a new time. Highly recommend this book.

    Beautiful

After loving the first book I read by this author (Pearl in the Sand), I was greatly looking forward to reading this one - and was certainly not disappointed. Once again she captivated me as she told the story of Sarah and the struggles she faced making her arranged marriage work in a time when wives were truly at the mercy of their husbands. I loved the historical accuracy, the depth of the characters, the practical wisdom woven through the fictional story and the stunning revelation of a God who is faithful to his children. A beautiful story. Can't wait to read more from this author.
