**Pride goes before the fall . . . but what comes after?**

*Darbury, England, 1814*

Amelia Barrett, heiress to an ancestral estate nestled in the English moors, defies family expectations and promises to raise her dying friend's infant baby. She'll risk everything to keep her word?even to the point of proposing to the child's father, Lucas, a sea captain she's never met.

Tragedy strikes when the child vanishes with little more than a sketchy ransom note hinting to her whereabouts. Fear for the child's safety drives Amelia and Lucas to test the boundaries of their love for this infant.

Amelia's detailed plans would normally see her through any trial, but now, desperate and shaken, she examines her soul and must face her one weakness: pride.

Lucas? strength and self-control have served him well and earned him much respect, but chasing perfection has kept him a prisoner of his own discipline.

Both must learn to accept God's sovereignty and relinquish control so they can grasp the future He has for planned for them.

    Great book

I really enjoyed reading this book and uncovering the plot. This was the first book I'd read by Sarah E Ladd so I was a bit hesitant if I would like it, but I was pleasantly surprised. I'd definitely recommend this one.

    Sweet Regency Romance

I really enjoyed this story. It had intrigue, laughs, history and characters I loved getting to know. I especially loved the main character's determination to keep her promise, no matter what, and the journey it took her on as she discovered not just romance but faith. A really sweet regency romance. Looking forward to reading more by this author. \\r\\n

An excellent first book in a new series

This book has it all, drama, romance and a dash of adventure! It follows a young woman's quest to continue to care for a baby entrusted to her despite obstacles threatening to tear them apart. Set in the early1800s, it is an intriguing storyline. \\r\\n\\r\\nThere is a focus on trusting God and prayer being a weapon when the most difficult circumstances arise for the main characters. Since we often turn to prayer as a last resort or after a difficult circumstance, it was encouraging these people did not. The author gently reminds us that God wishes us to turn to Him first thing in all situations. Yet this was done subtly, and naturally. \\r\\n\\r\\nThe love grew naturally between the main characters. It didn't feel forced or rushed, and I appreciated the way the author examined the many differences in lifestyle between them, keeping with the important societal norms of the 1800s. The story included several twists and turns keeping my attention to the very end. I am about to start reading the second book in this series. I recommend it for fans of historical romance.

    Thoroughly Entertaining

The Heiress of Winterwood is a highly entertaining novel, and I enjoyed it from start to finish! I was also really glad to find that there is another book in the series. The author maintains the attention of the reader really well, and I didn't find there were any lulls in the story. A definite keeper, and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys period romance novels.
