An intriguing book, quite unlike any other *The Marrow of Modern Divinity* defies pigeonholing. It was written in the 1600s by an author of whom we know little, yet it proved to be a critically important and controversial theological text.??Penned as dialogue between a minister (Evangelista), a young Christian (Neophytus), a legalist (Nomista) who believes Christianity is a set of rules to be obeyed and Antinomista who thinks it's okay to sin because God will forgive him anyway, it makes for a wonderfully insightful book that remains tremendously relevant for our world today.??This newly laid out and eagerly awaited edition includes explanatory notes by the famous puritan Thomas Boston, an Introduction by Philip Ryken and an historical Introduction by William Vandoodewaard.

    Marrow for the Soul

After coming across this title in many references, and recently reading a couple of detailed works on the church controversy which was stirred up in part by this book in Scotland- finally decided to read it for myself. This edition contains Thomas Boston's detailed notes attached to the work which was reprinted in the 1700 but the original work by the author E. F. was first published in the turmoil of Puritan England prior to the convening of the Westminster Assembly (mid-1600's). The book follows the dialogue between four major characters and covers their interaction on a number of key theological themes, grace vs law, covenant theology, assurance of faith, the preaching of the good news (""""the offer of the gospel""""), the place of the """"law"""" in the Christin life etc. The author E. F. compiles a whole range of quotes from the works of famous and well known divines (theologians) of the day and strategically puts them in the mouth of the 4 characters. The work is fully in the stream of Calvinistic or Reformed thought but deals with biblical doctrines. The book is divided into two main parts, the first dealing with the above mentioned topics whie the second is an exposition of the Ten Commandments. The thoughtful reader will benefit greatly from working his way slowly through this book. \\nFinally this is a well presented and formatted edition, with clear headings and subsections with Boston's notes in the margins where room is left for note-taking. Thankyou Christian…
