Pastor and author Michael Horton believes that the constant search for the next big spiritual breakthrough has left many Christians disillusioned and burnt out. In this book, he helps readers to recover their sense of joy in the ordinary, and offers a guide to discipleship that lasts over the long haul.

Radical. Crazy. Transformative and restless. Every word we read these days seems to suggest there's a ?next-best-thing,? if only we would change our comfortable, compromising lives. In fact, the greatest fear most Christians have is boredom---the sense that they are missing out on the radical life Jesus promised. One thing is certain. No one wants to be ?ordinary.? Yet pastor and author Michael Horton believes that our attempts to measure our spiritual growth by our experiences, constantly seeking after the next big breakthrough, have left many Christians disillusioned and disappointed. There's nothing wrong with an energetic faith; the danger is that we can burn ourselves out on restless anxieties and unrealistic expectations. What's needed is not another program or a fresh approach to spiritual growth; it's a renewed appreciation for the commonplace. Far from a call to low expectations and passivity, Horton invites readers to recover their sense of joy in the ordinary. He provides a guide to a sustainable discipleship that happens over the long haul---not a quick fix that leaves readers empty with unfulfilled promises. Convicting and ultimately empowering, Ordinary is not a call to do less; it's an invitation to experience the elusive joy of the ordinary Christian life.

I really needed to read this

A friend of mine, in her review of Radical by David Platt, said that that book could easily be simply called Ordinary. Platt and others have called us to wholehearted discipleship; living all of life for the glory of Christ. \\r\\n\\r\\nAfter reading (and benefiting greatly by) books with the names Radical, Radical Together and the Transformational Church, I came across Ordinary by Michael Horton, and didn't really know what to expect or think. Was it going to be a book opposing the views of Platt etc? Would it just be a Christian version of mediocrity, going with the flow, not having significant dreams for our role in His kingdom coming?\\r\\n\\r\\nThankfully, after reading the book, the answer is no. In summary, Ordinary is a call for Christians to not get constantly caught up with movements and ministry ambition - as these can be exhausting and discouraging. Instead, Michael Horton calls us to focus on the ordinary, everyday call of Jesus to trust Him, get in His Word, pray lots, meet with His people, love our neighbours - and leave the extraordinary up to God (because God does most of His extraordinary work through ordinary Christians). \\r\\n\\r\\nIt's a very refreshing book - removing extra-biblical standards of living that inevitably lead to guilt, and guiding God's people to trusting God in all things, and seeking to live wisely and faithfully in the path He has set before us. \\r\\n\\r\\n
