Lucetta Plum is an actress on the rise in New York City, but is forced to abandon her starring role when a fan's interest turns threatening. Lucinda's widowed friend, Abigail Hart, is delighted at the opportunity to meddle in Lucetta's life and promptly whisks her away to her grandson's estate to hide out.

Bram Haverstein may appear to simply be a somewhat eccentric gentleman of means, but a mysterious career and a secret fascination with a certain actress mean there's much more to him than society knows.

Lucetta, who has no interest in Abigail's matchmaking machinations, has the best intentions of remaining cordial but coolly distant to Bram. But when she can't ignore the strange and mysterious things going on in his house, it'll take more than good intentions to keep her from trying to discover who Bram is behind the part he plays.

    Gothic overtones.

I have never been a fan of gothic things, so that element in the story did not grab me. Otherwise, the story is fine and a light read as one expects from a Jen Turano novel.

    Lovely Novel

Witty, sweet fun and romantic are all things I have come to expect from this talented author! This novel is a delightful story filled with wonderful characters, hilarious moments and intrigue.

    Intriguing but far-fetched

This was the first of Jen Turano's books I haven't absolutely loved, which was a little disappointing. I think because the storyline just seemed a little farfetched and forced at times. However, like all of this author's books, the romance was sweet and the situations amusing with memorable characters challenged not only in love but life. Still a good read, just not quite the book I was expecting. \\r\\n

    Is historical chick-lit a thing?

If it's not, it should be. I love Jen Turano's brand of humorous historical fiction-it's a historical version of chick-lit, only without the bawdy bits. And she manages to touch on some of the less nice elements of history, like the lack of women's rights, without ever becoming maudlin or preachy. I've read all her novels, and she hasn't failed me yet. \\r\\n\\r\\nPlaying the Part is great fun, because as well as the stalker and romance plots, there is also the mystery about the castle: is it haunted? If not, why do strange things keep happening? (There's the almost-predictable missing jewels and walking armour, but there's the funnier question of how did the woman-hating goat get into Miss Plum's tower room?). \\r\\n\\r\\nAll in all, great fun for those looking for a lighthearted read with a serious undertone. \\r\\n\\r\\nThanks to Bethany House and NetGalley for providing a free ebook for review.
