A Must Read
Every once in a while, a good book will appear and shake the scholarly world. This book by Matthew Bates is one such book. Its publication at a time when the Christian world is celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Reformation is timely. In this book, Bates examines afresh what is meant by salvation by """"FAITH ALONE. """" He argues that """"faith"""" (or pistis in the Greek) should be translated as """"allegiance. """" This allegiance comprises three elements: mental assent, professed fealty and embodied loyalty. This is as it should be because Jesus is King! Bates' argument that we are saved by allegiance alone provides a needed corrective to the popular (mis)understanding that we are saved by faith alone where faith is usually understood as just a mental assent to the truth that Jesus is Savior and Lord. Bates' thesis is sure to cause controversy but it needs to be reckoned with. Highly recommended!
