Sundown (#03 in Sky King Ranch Series)

This is the third and final book in the Sky King Ranch series. Although it mainly focuses on Cole and Tae's story, there are continuing threads through the three books, so it's probably best if you read them in order. There are also a number of characters popping in from Warren's other books, so that's a nice treat if you've read them, though it's not essential to know everything about them. There's enough backstory for that. \\n\\nCan Tae and her colleague make an antidote for the deadly virus before the Russians can deploy it? Will there be kissies? Will all of the hunky Kingston brothers make peace and stay alive?\\n\\nLots of suspense, but also deeper issues of faith. What if you're so guilty about the past that you don't think you're worth saving? Is it ethical to use violence to take down evil? Are some sacrifices too much to ask?\\n\\nAnd of course there'll be kissies. It's romantic suspense! I think Cole and Tae were my favourite couple from the three books. \\n\\nA satisfying conclusion to the series. Though I'm sure these characters will be making cameos again.

I liked the way Sundown built on the plot and character points introduced and developed in the previous two novels, and the way it did a great job of rounding out the unfinished character arcs. However, I didn't like the way the timeline kept jumping around. Now, this could be the formatting of the electronic review copy, but the story often moved from one scene to another without any kind of scene break, and the scenes were often showing the same actions from different points of view. Yes, that helped ramp up the tension, but it also meant I had to backtrack several times to figure out which characters were in the scene. I also thought there were too many flashbacks, to the point where they messed with the tension. It felt like every time we got to something fast-paced and exciting, the character stopped think about a formative experience from months or years ago, which slowed the story down. I actually skimmed a lot of the backstory because I wanted to know what was happening now, not what happened months or years or decades ago. Overall, Sundown was a solid romantic suspense that those who have read the first two novels in the Sky King Ranch series will want to read to find out about Tae and to see Colt get his happy ending. \\n\\nThanks to Revell and NetGalley for providing a free ebook for review.
