**Is 'newer' really 'better'?** We often assume so, but if we do treat the past as inferior we will ignore the legacy of history, and thus will find ourselves stranded on the tiny desert island of our own moment in time. In particular, this applies to Christian theology, which should be thought, and lived, corporately by the church down through the ages.?The remedy to 'chronological snobbery' is, as C. S. Lewis put it, 'to keep the clean sea breeze of the centuries blowing through our minds'. Such is the motivation behind Michael Reeves' introduction to a selection of influential or significant Christian theologians.?This accessible and informative volume covers the Apostolic Fathers, Justin Martyr and Irenaeus, Athanasius, Augustine, Anselm and Aquinas. Each chapter begins with a brief biography and some background, then surveys each theologian's major work or works, gives a timeline for historical context, and ends with guidance for further reading.?

    Fresh Introduction to Classic Thinkers

A new generation expects things in a new way. So Hollywood is remaking old movies and old comics with whiz-bang special effects. Modern musicians are rerecording old songs with fresh instrumentation and harmonies. \\r\\n\\r\\nThat's what Reeves does here. He takes some of the stock-standard theologians who can be found in various Church History introductions or dictionaries of famous theologians, and presents them in a fresh way. Successive chapters introduce the life and times and major writings of the Apostolic Fathers, Justin Martyr and Irenaeus, Athanasius, Augustine, Anselm, and Aquinas. He presents some rollicking good yarns, and shows how such dusty old thinkers can still be applicable to issues of Bible and church today. \\r\\n\\r\\nSo the CONTENT is hardly new, but Reeves writes with a fresh STYLE to engage a new generation of readers. (So, for example, some buried allusions to popular culture like fantasy novelist Terry Pratchett. ) As he explains (pp. 9-10), it's like you're at a party with famous celebrities, and just needing a helpful introduction to make you brave enough to engage directly. Reeves offers such an entree in relatively short, readable chapters. \\r\\n\\r\\nA matching volume, introducing theologians from Luther through Barth, is due out from IVP in early 2011.
