**Born into two different classes, James and Camille shouldn?t even know each other. But when the pursuit of a missing ruby brings them together, much more than a mere acquaintance is ignited.**

The daughter of a curiosity shop owner, Camille would never be considered a lady. Nor does she want to be. With a fiery personality, she dreams of adventures far beyond the walls of her family's modest business. But when her father thrusts a mysterious box into her hands and disappears, her whole world?dreams and all?shifts.

James is an apothecary, tending to the health needs of the town of Bentworth. His father, a well-known explorer and collector, is quite wealthy from the spoils of his adventures until one risky gamble and a stolen gem leave him on the edge of ruin. Seeking his father's approval, James picks up the hunt for the stolen ruby, leading him to the door of Camille's curiosity shop.

With both of their lives in danger as the ruby remains at large, James squires Camille away to the Bentworth School, believing that would be the last place her pursuers would look for her. They both find their hearts and dreams heading in a new direction, but before they are free to embrace their future they must solve the mystery looming around them. The more they uncover, however, the harder it becomes to know whom to trust. And they begin to realize that recovering the ruby may require a great sacrifice: their newfound love and maybe even their lives.

    Well written, enjoyable reading

I really enjoyed reading this book. It was the first novel of Sarah Ladd's that I've read and I will definitely be reading more. The characters and descriptions are woven together really well and it was easy to follow. In this book, we see two people who are drawn to each other, despite being from very different backgrounds, I believe simply because their hearts felt the same yearning for love. They both seem to have difficult father's whose approval they can't seem to win. The story show cases how a love for money can destroy family and everything that is most important. Without giving away too much, I didn't love the ending. It was still a nice ending, but not for everyone involved. It was very bittersweet. I would have liked to have seen a few more Christian references in the tale, however. It could have passed for a non-Christian book, without swearing or the like.

    Easy Reading

This is the first book I have read from Sarah Ladd. I loved it, it was engaging and held my interest. It had a bit of romance and a bit of mystery surrounding a stolen ruby which made for a great read. Can't wait to read the others in the series.

    Worth a read!

This book has made me very interested to look up Sarah Ladd's other novels. I really enjoyed Camille's character and her depth of knowledge despite her somewhat lowly station. The underlying mystery of the stolen Bevoy gave the plot a few twists and turns which kept me on the edge of my seat. I would definitely recommend this to a friend.

More Jane Eyre than Jane Austen

The Curiosity Keeper is set during the Regency, a period I usually love, but there was nothing especially Regency about it-it could have been set at any time in nineteenth century England. There was nothing especially Regency in either the setting, the characters, or the plot-in fact, the central plot device of the missing Bevoy ruby seemed more gothic Victorian than Regency. In hindsight, this may have contributed to the general feeling of malaise I felt while reading: while it was a perfectly sound novel, with no obvious defects, I didn't find it especially original or interesting. \\r\\n\\r\\nSarah Ladd won the 2011 Genesis Award for her first novel, The Heiress of Winterwood, and I very much enjoyed that and its two sequels. But The Curiosity Keeper, first in her new Treasures of Surrey series, fell flat for me. The writing was solid, but nothing sparkled. It all felt a little contrived, and I found it difficult to relate to either Camille or Jonathan. Camille was too passive for someone who was supposed to be intelligent (and if she really was that clever, why hadn't she worked out the truth behind her family and their shop?). Jonathan was the second son who had no interest in stepping into his unwanted inheritance. And they both had fathers most charitably described as imperfect . . . perhaps too imperfect. \\r\\n\\r\\nOverall, The Curiosity Keeper was unmemorable, at least for me.
