Can feisty minister's daughter Livvie Ellison and bruised war hero Nicholas Stamford move past presumption to realise the true strength of love?

"Handsome appearance counts for naught unless matched by good character and actions." That's the firm opinion of not-so-meek minister's daughter Lavinia Ellison. So even though all the other villagers of St. Hampton Heath are swooning over the newly returned seventh Earl of Hawkesbury, she is not impressed. If a man won't take his responsibilities seriously and help those who are supposed to be able to depend on him, he deserves no respect from her. In Lavinia's pretty, gray eyes, Nicholas Stamford is just as arrogant and reckless as his brother--who stole the most important person in Livvie's world.

Nicholas is weighed down by his own guilt and responsibility, by the pain his careless brother caused, and by the legacy of war he's just left. This quick visit home to St. Hampton Heath will be just long enough to ease a small part of that burden. Asking him to bother with the lives of the villagers when there's already a bailiff on the job is simply too much to expect. That is, until the hoydenish, intelligent, and very opinionated Miss Ellison challenges him to see past his pain and pride. With her angelic voice in his head, he may even be beginning to care. But his isn't the only heart that needs to change.

These two lonely hearts may each have something the other needs. But with society's opposition, ancestral obligations, and a shocking family secret, there may be too many obstacles in their way.

Fans of Georgette Heyer, Lori Wick, and Julie Klassen will enjoy the spirited exchanges between the bluestocking minister's daughter and the bruised war hero as they move past pride and presumption to a humbled appreciation of God's grace and the true strength of love.

    Beautifully crafted story

This story is written in fine detail but is not at all boring or heavy in the way that small detail descriptions can be at times. You develop a sense that you know the characters well and I was excited to see what was happening in their lives. I do hope that we get to hear what has become of them in future books in the series! Can't wait to read them all

    Great Read

This is book one in a three book series. What a lovely book. I was thinking it was an easy holiday read but nothing that stands out but then I got to halfway and with all the twists and turns I absolutely loved it. I will be reading the next one in the series for sure.

    Good historical fiction

This was the first book that I have read by this Australian author. The story has two main characters, Lord Hawkesbury and Miss Ellison who is the Pastors daughter and their interactions both with their community and family and between themselves is interesting to read. The novel has quite a few twists and is written well overall.

    AMAZING

Words can't even describe how much I love this book (trilogy)! Carolyn has a great way of putting a little bit of mystery into every book. I just didn't want to put it down! This book (trilogy) has a bit of everything, mystery, romance and lots of banter. This trilogy shows how strong forgiveness can be and how we all need it. I would suggest this book for anyone aged 15-100. It is a must read!

    A wonderful new author!

This book was a gift from a friend, and I admit, I'd never heard of the author. . . I was very quickly a fan! Witty banter between lead characters, strong personalities, and a struggle between pride and faith. . . . with a beautiful romance to boot! A wonderful combination, and delightful read!
