**Beautifully written and deeply poignant, The Making of Us allows readers to walk alongside author and radio personality Sheridan Voysey during a transformational moment in his life journey. Picking up where *Resurrection Year: Turning Broken Dreams Into New Beginnings* left off, Sheridan helps us process what we can learn about our identities in the face of disappointment and change.**

Life had not gone according to plan for Sheridan Voysey and his wife, Merryn. When infertility ended their dream of becoming parents, they uprooted their lives and relocated from Australia to Oxford, England, so Merryn could pursue her professional goals. But the move meant Sheridan had to give up his well-established career in Christian radio, and though he was experiencing some success as a writer, he couldn't reconcile his expectations for his life with the reality he was living. Lost and directionless, he came to a sobering realization: *I don't know who I am*.

Following the example of many a seeker, Sheridan decided to pair his spiritual journey with a literal one: a hundred-mile pilgrimage along the northeast coast of England. Inspired by the life and influence of the monk Cuthbert, who was among the first to evangelize northern England in the 600s, Voysey and his friend DJ traveled on foot from the Holy Island of Lindisfarne to Durham, where the famed Lindisfarne Gospels were on display.

What makes us who we are? What shapes our hopes and dreams, and how do we adjust when things don't go as we hoped? Can we recover if we make a choice that's less than perfect? Voysey tackles these questions and others as he deftly weaves together Cuthbert's story, the history of early Christianity in England, and his own struggle to find his identity and purpose. His introspective writing leads readers to consider their own stories and reflect on how God calls each of us to an identity bigger than any earthly role or career. Part travel memoir, part pilgrim's journal, *The Making of Us* is a quiet story including a chapter-by-chapter reflection guide of trust in God's leading for our lives, no matter where our paths take us.

    Beautifully-written and thought-provoking

In the book 'Resurrection Year', Voysey told the story of his and his wife's journey of infertility and how they had to come to the point of saying goodbye to their dream of having a child so they could walk into the new dreams God might have for them. In some ways, this book follows on from there, but is a more general reflection on meaning, identity and our place in the bigger picture of life. \\n\\nSheridan and His friend DJ embark on a walking pilgrimage from Lindisfarne to Durham in England, following the path of a 7th-century monk called Cuthbert. There are some beautiful descriptions of the journey itself and what they learned about the early church on the way. However, the internal journey is probably more important as Sheridan reflects on how we can use our giftings to join God in the work he has for us to do. \\n\\nIt was perhaps a little slow-moving in parts, but that also reflected the type of book it was. Not something to be rushed, but to ponder over. Gentle, thought-provoking and moving in places. There is also a comprehensive list of reflection questions for each chapter in the back of the book for those who want to explore the matter at a more personal level.

Left footprints all over my heart!

Not only could I not put Sheridan's book down, but I have found myself thinking about it on and off since I finished. Themes of pilgrimage really capture my imagination, so I loved engaging with Sheridan and DJ's fascinating journey that retraced the steps of St Cuthbert. 'The Making of Us' has left footprints all over my heart and I have enjoyed feasting on its many transformative 'take-away meals'. \\r\\n\\r\\nHere is one of my favorites from page168. . . \\r\\n""""For those on the path of God. . . all we're told is that ultimately we will be like him. Our body with his nature. Our personality with his character. Ailments gone, afflictions over. Gifts glistening. Sins taken away. Our faltering candle of virtue turned into a furnace of other-centeredness making us the God-shaped selves he's always intended. Until that day, and to the extend we yield to it, we are being drawn toward that future self. Step-by-step we go, one notch of radiance to another. Becoming more like him, and so becoming our true selves. """"\\r\\n\\r\\nI totally recommend 'The Making of Us' as a faithful guide for the broken hearted, the weary pilgrim and the confused traveler - you won't be disappointed where it will lead you! \\r\\n\\r\\n

    Unexpected and Enduring

An affirmation that life itself is a pilgrimage in which God calls us to attend to life as it happens, to, withing and around us. Sheridans account of his journey and conversations with his dear friend DJ encourages an awakening to a contemplative approach to life and relationships. \\r\\n\\r\\nA transformative read which opens the mind and heart to awareness of life as a deeper journey to self and the heart of God. \\r\\n\\r\\nSheridan also includes a companion study guide to help enhance the readers personal journey with this book, recommended for young adults and all those experiencing lifes journey.

    Gems all the way through

I was so keen to read The Making of Us as I've long been a fan of Sheridan Voysey, having listened to his fabulous radio program Open House for many years and having read several of his previous books. \\r\\n\\r\\nThe topic of this book, which is all about how beautiful things can emerge when life doesn't go as planned, resonates with me as I know my life hasn't always gone as planned. \\r\\n\\r\\nSheridan takes us on a beautifully descriptive journey as he and his friend DJ walk in the footsteps of St Cuthbert on their pilgrimage to Lindisfarne. Along the way DJ Sheridan have deep conversations and what they share and discuss is very real and raw as they seek wisdom and understanding. \\r\\n\\r\\nI loved so many things that Sheridan said, but one so important reminder is that our one great calling is to love God and love others. When one stream ends, go back up the river and simply love those standing before you. And when we can't become what we want to be, we can still become who we're meant to be. \\r\\n\\r\\nI believe we all can identify with life not going as we planned and there is wisdom to be found in this book for us all. Don't hesitate! Read it now and discover the gems inside! \\r\\n\\r\\nI listened to the audio version of the book as I love Sheridan's familiar voice. . . I recommend this as a great way to listen to the book!
