After the Reformation, the Marrow Controversy of the eighteenth century is noted as one of the most significant and defining events in the Scottish church. However, until now, there has not been a serious analysis of the theology of the Marrow Men as it relates to churches in Scotland during the aftermath of the controversy. In this important study, William vanDoodewaard identifies characteristic understandings of Marrow theology on the atonement, saving faith, and the free offer of the gospel and traces them out in the theology of the Seceder tradition. In doing so, he presents substantial evidence for the continuity of Marrow theology in the Associate Presbytery and Associate Synod in Scotland during the eighteenth century. He ably demonstrates that while Marrow theology was not the primary cause of the Secession churches, the Seceders were aware of the significance of Marrow theology and consciously made it an integral part of their churches.

    Marrow Theology

I was led to open this book after reading """"Scottish Federalism and Covenantalism in Transition"""" and its lengthy chapter on the historical and theological analysis of the Marrow Controversy [MC] through the eyes of two figures - Hadow and Erskine's federal theologies respectively. This book under review zooms in on the MC more acutely and is more thorough and comprehensive. Theologians with pro and anti Marrow stances are viewed more from a series of doctrinal positions, namely the atonement, saving faith, assurance of faith and finally the """"offer"""" of the gospel. This is primarily the first part of the book. The second part which was a lesser interest to me was a tracing out of the pro-Marrow theology emphasis in the breakaway church of the Secession Church. Both halves of this book may be of interest especially to Presbyterian adherents as it points in my opinion to a pivotal divergence of emphases that still marks many Presbyterian communions of today, though by far the most dominant view is the pro-Marrow stance.
