As a lover of historical fiction, I was captivated by this novel very quickly. Written in first person, one is easily engaged by young Jeremiah Prins' story telling narrative that is rich and colourful, both in it's beauty and in the horror of wartime suffering. Indeed he is a character that rightfully earns respect and awe for his maturity, cunning and nous. \\r\\nRecounting WWII in the Dutch East Indies, closer to our Australian soil, was interesting as much as it was shocking. The testimony of the ability of the human spirit to rise above unthinkable suffering and hardship is hauntingly told with endearing love, pride and without judgement of the choices that had to be made to survive. \\r\\nUltimately a story of love and sacrifice, that fittingly concludes with a final twist on the last few pages that brings Jeremiah and the reader to satisfying closure. \\r\\nI will be seeking more of Sigmund Brouwer's novels in the future.
