I first read this book when it was called """"Miracle on the River Kwai"""" which I think is a much better title. Ernest Gordon tells the remarkable story of his time as a POW during WW2 on the infamous Burma Railway. Having been taken prisoner by the Japanese he tells of the horrors of life in the Death camps of Thailand. The prisoners faced starvation, beatings, murder by the Japanese and were forced to work beyond human endurance. Facing ongoing brutality, the prisoners themselves descended into selfishness and barbarism with an """"every man for himself"""" attitude. But things started to change. Stories of courage and bravery spread through the camps. Incredible stories of men who gave their lives to save their mates. The men began to wonder if there was a better way. Gordon himself lay dying in the """"Death House"""" when some Christian men came to help him. Gordon gave his life to the Lord through the love and giving of these men. Gradually a new sense of life began to transform the camps as the prisoners became servants to each other. Many found a christianity that could support and heal them during that time of darkness. He also shares about their ability to forgive the Japanese. This is a truly inspirational book. Whilst there is some mention of the atrocities the main focus of the story is God's miraculous redemption. This is a classic that is still as relevant today and recommended for every Christian.

Terrific Autobiography well written
I first read this amazing biography in 1968. I have yet to read its equal. \\r\\nThe book says more about Christianity than a whole load of sermons, commentaries or many modern so-called 'Christian' novels. It is essential reading for established Christians of all persuasions, as well as for seekers and skeptics. Truly remarkable!\\r\\nTreat your self to a satisfying read which will also go a long way to answering those difficult grey areas.
