The march on Washington might have become nothing more than a ragged hike across a majestic mall if Martin Luther King, Jr. had not led us through a "dream" and onto a "mountaintop." ?Such is the power of illustrations. They contain a hidden dynamic of living that captures our attention and furthers our understanding in a way that no other sermonic tool can match. Can they be overused and their purpose abused? Yes--and by many they are. But to eliminate them completely would be unwise, maintains Bryan Chapell. ?Instead, he responds to those concerns by reviewing the theory behind illustrations, sharing why they're important, and demonstrating how you can use them effectively in your biblical preaching. Chapell adeptly presents a biblical case for using illustrations in sermons. He argues that illustrations aren't a second-rate gimmick or trick. Rather, illustrations are biblically warranted and a powerful means to apply the message to the lives of hearers. He then goes on to present guidelines on choosing, using, framing and storing illustrations, and how to link them to the main point. He also points out common pitfalls to be avoided. Helpful for all preachers of the Bible.

Helpful analysis of importance and defence of illustrations in preaching
Chapell presents a case for the importance of preachers using illustrations in sermons. \\r\\n\\r\\nHe discusses the background and theory, the method of making illustrations and the practice of working with illustrations. \\r\\n\\r\\nFor a preacher already convinced of the use of illustrations the first few chapters may add little other than greater insight into why and affirmation of effectiveness. \\r\\n\\r\\nAlso included are insights from communication theories. Whilst obviously limited and often unbiblical (Chapell notes this), there is still help to be gained and he does well to analyse and show how these can assist the preacher understand how to communicate to the modern gathering. \\r\\n\\r\\nThe chapter on """"cautions for effective illustrations"""" is excellent and well worth reading to guard the preacher against unfortunately common ineffective uses the preacher may not even be aware of. \\r\\n\\r\\nThe chapter on """"finding and filing illustrations"""" was helpful, however unfortunately barely addressed how technology could be used effectively (the book was revised in 2001, so even since then technology has moved significantly). \\r\\n\\r\\nPreachers convinced of the use of illustrations will be sharpened and preachers reluctant to use illustrations will be challenged. Overall, a helpful read. \\r\\n
