Its story-centric approach is ideal for pastors, students, Sunday school teachers, and laypeople alike.

Good devotional - but not a critical commentary

This commentary is 627 pages long, but it is not the standard critical commentary one might think.

Each chapter covers a chapter in 1 & 2 Chronicles and is around 8-12 pages long.

The font size is good, and the text is easy on the eyes.

The author's style is very easy to read.

Each chapter begins with the complete NIV text followed by:

    1) A brief overview of the entire text just read, with some references to other portions of Scripture, and touching on certain themes and ideas.

    2) A section by section look at the text (rather than verse by verse). This is sometimes simply a retelling of the text without any major comment on the text itself.

    3) A devotional thought or application of the text. This is often very loosely based upon the text.

As a devotional commentary it fulfills its purpose, although I think that it could be done better. Far too often the ""devotional"" aspect had precious little to do with the overall text, but simply one or two words or thoughts within the text, and sometimes (as in the genealogies), not even then.

If you are happy with this, then fine. Personally, I was a bit disappointed, but that is only me.

However, if you want a good critical commentary, it is still hard to go past Sara Japhet, Ralph W. Klein, or the older Curtis & Madsen in the International Critical Commentary series.
