Pastor and scholar Jonathan Griffiths considers what the Bible has to say about preaching in the post-apostolic age, beginning with a theology of the word of God, and proceeding to survey Greek preaching terminology, and the scope and character of New Testament word ministries.

Part 1 addresses three foundational matters: a theology of the word of God; an overview of NT Greek terms related to preaching; the scope and character of NT word ministries. Part 2 concentrates on exegetical studies of sections of NT teaching that relate especially to the post-apostolic context. Part 3 summarizes the exegetical findings, sets them within the context of biblical theology, and addresses some broader theological implications.

    An insightful survey

Most of this book is in two parts: the first discusses foundational issues, laying down basic assumptions and defining key terms; the second is a series of exegetical studies into passages in which 'preaching' and related terms occur. More detailed interpretive discussions are contained in the excursus--they are useful for those who are curious about these issues; the more casual reader may skip them without loss of continuity. On the whole, Griffiths' detailed and insightful study will clarify for the reader the biblical idea of preaching.
