Winner of the Christy Award 2019: HISTORICAL ROMANCE (tie)
Poet, atheist, and communist, New Yorker Joy Davidman was the most unlikely partner for English theologian, C S Lewis. Yet in her letters, he discovered a kindred spirit. This heart-rending historical romance novel comes with an endorsement by Douglas Gresham, Joy Davidman's son.
Endorsements:
"I have read with varying interest, all the biographies about my stepfather, but for some reason never expected that several would be written about my mother, which was I suppose rather foolish of me. After all, she was a hugely talented writer and poet, and an exceptional lady. However, there are now several published biographies of her available. When Patti Callahan decided that a new book about her was warranted, I was surprised, but as is my wont, I helped her as and when I could. The result of her work has turned out to be extraordinary. Callahan's book, which she claims to be semi-fictional, somehow captures the everyday nature of my mother rather beautifully! It tells us not merely of a courageous great poet, a novelist and even something of a theologian, but of a great woman. And that is something that I think, should be known." - Douglas Gresham (Joy Davidman's son)
A heart-rending historical romance, and a glimpse into the life of a writer.
Poet, atheist and communist, New Yorker Joy Davidman is an unconventional woman - and an unlikely partner for an English academic and theologian.
And when she starts a correspondence with Narnia author C. S. Lewis, she isn't looking for love. Her own marriage crumbling, she seeks refuge in her work, and guidance from a writer she admires.

Embarking on the adventure of a lifetime, Joy travels from America to England and back again. Facing heartbreak and poverty, discovering friendship and faith, against all the odds, the couple struggle to secure a love that will endure forever.

Becoming Mrs. Lewis: The Improbable Love Story of Joy Davidman and C. S. Lewis$24.99
Brings Joy Davidman vividly to life - a woman with very modern struggles, whom God drew to Himself. An interesting insight into the world of C S Lewis and his """"set"""", and the unusual love story of these two strong characters. They both lived life so fully. My only reason for a 4-star review is that I found it over-long, a lot of detail - but it's so well written that's a minor quibble. A good addition to the library for C S Lewis fans, but should also be read more widely by those interested in the complex difficulties of negotiating messy modern life and drawing closer to our wonderful mysterious God.

Fascinating
I enjoyed this story. It is a work of fiction, but it is based on true events. It drew me in from the start. The descriptions of England make you feel like you are there. It has many quotes from C S Lewis's books throughout. It is encouraging, sad, powerful and hope filled.

Very, very good!
Even though it is (fact based) fiction, the author has researched so thoroughly that it feels like a biography. I read this alongside C. S. Lewis's autobiography Surprised by Joy which made the experience even richer! What a beautiful story of love between the like-minded and like-hearted Joy Davidson and C. S. Lewis!
