Who better to face the greatest evil of the 20th-century than a humble man of faith?
As Adolf Hitler and the Nazis seduced a nation, bullied a continent, and attempted to exterminate the Jews of Europe, a small number of dissidents and saboteurs worked to dismantle the Third Reich from the inside. One of these was Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a pastor and author. In his blockbuster New York Times bestselling biography, Eric Metaxas takes both strands of Bonhoeffer's life - the theologian and the spy - and draws them together to tell a searing story of incredible moral courage in the face of monstrous evil.
Metaxas presents the fullest accounting of Bonhoeffer's heart-wrenching decision to leave the safe haven of America to return to Hitler's Germany, and sheds new light on Bonhoeffer's involvement in the famous Valkyrie plot and in "Operation 7," the effort to smuggle Jews into neutral Switzerland. In a deeply moving narrative, Metaxas uses previously unavailable documents?including personal letters, detailed journal entries, and firsthand personal accounts?to reveal dimensions of Bonhoeffer's life and theology never before seen.

Bonhoeffer is my favourite biography hands down. An interesting and inspiring story that challenged my understanding and practical outworking of discipleship.

A Must Read
Among the biographies I have read, I must say Metaxas's Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy is the best in recent years. It provides a well-researched, comprehensive, fascinating and moving account of this German pastor's life, ministry and martyrdom. It gives great insights into Bonhoeffer's thinking and also helps us to understand the books and letters he had written. More importantly, it shows us how Bonhoeffer lived out the implications of Christian discipleship even unto death. This biography is highly recommended!

Impacting
Not many books have impacted me as much as this biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. The book closely follows the life of Christian pastor Bonhoeffer as he struggles with Nazi Germany. Bonhoeffer believed that actions must follow what one believed otherwise they cannot claim to believe it and his life followed suit. \\r\\nHe now calls all believers to do the same.

Mixed value
It's with mixed feelings that I review this recent biography of Bonhoeffer. On the one hand, it is a compelling story of a man who grappled with extremely difficult situations under Nazi-ruled Germany during the 1930's and 1940's. It is well written and draws you into Bonhoeffer's life and family. \\r\\n\\r\\nBut. . . there are significant and weighty criticisms from Bonhoeffer scholars that the book gives an inaccurate summary of Bonhoeffer's theology - that the author unfairly turns Bonhoeffer into a conservative evangelical after his own image, and ignores aspects of Bonhoeffer's theology that appear to paint a different view of Bonhoeffer's beliefs. \\r\\n\\r\\nI would give the book 2 stars, given these concerns, and yet the book is sufficiently well written to still recommend with 3 stars - yet, the reader should be willing to do some independent thinking and treat Bonhoeffer's theology with a little more caution than the gushing praise lavished upon it in ignorance by Metaxas.
