Where is God in the suffering of a mentally ill person? What happens to the soul when the mind is ill? How are Christians to respond to mental illness? In this brave and compassionate book, theologian and priest Kathryn Greene-McCreight confronts these difficult questions raised by her own mental illness--bipolar disorder. With brutal honesty, she tackles often avoided topics such as suicide, mental hospitals, and shock therapy. Greene-McCreight offers the reader everything from poignant and raw glimpses into the mind of a mentally ill person to practical and forthright advice for their friends, family, and clergy.

The first edition has been recognized as one of the finest books on the subject. This thoroughly revised edition incorporates updated research and adds anecdotal and pastoral commentary. It also includes a new foreword by the current Archbishop of Canterbury and a new afterword by the author.

    Great book

I had brought grief for the afflicted and felt like I was wading through mud very clinical . . . . so was not sure to purchase this book So glad I did the author has bi-polar disorder not the same as my type of mental illness but that was ok its was still very relevant I had a lot of moments that made me go aha . . . e. g. like the reason I often, when I am very ill, feel as tho God has abandoned me he has not but it feels like that or I'm not really a christian etc etc Mental illness is a disease of the brain I needed to to told that over and over to finally get it This book is not an easy read but it is very well worth it especially if you are struggling or have someone close who is struggling with the illness. I have been told mental illness was the devil, have more faith, your demonic, pull yourself together I wish I could these are the lies I was told or heard from other Christians so I hid my mental illness from as many as I could till I lost my faith that was when i realized its not my fault I did not ask for this disease just like people don't ask for diabetes or cancer While my faith in God has been tested God has alway been there
