Determined to Believe is written for those who are interested in or even troubled by questions about God's sovereignty and human freedom and responsibility. John Lennox writes in the spirit of helping people to get to grips with the biblical treatment of this issue for themselves. In this comprehensive review of the topic of theological determinism, Lennox seeks firstly to define the problem, looking at the concepts of freedom, the different kinds of determinism, and the moral problems these pose. He then equips the reader with biblical teaching on the topic and explores the spectrum of theological opinion on it. Following this Lennox delves deeper into the Gospels and then investigates what we can learn regarding determinism and responsibility from Paul's discussion in Romans on God's dealings with Israel. Finally Lennox tackles the issue of Christian assurance. This nuanced and detailed study challenges some of the widely held assumptions in the area of theological determinism and brings a fresh perspective to the debate.

If everything is determined, why bother to do anything?

Thank you from all who want to call on the name of the Lord but are cast into doubt and despair by teachings on predestination, election and human free-will. \\r\\n\\r\\nIf this is you, if you are wondering if faith is a work and whether you should be looking for it at all, if your assurance of the sovereign grace and love of God seems to depend paradoxically on a self assessment, please read this book. If nothing else, it will encourage you to go back to Scripture to understand God instead of relying on theological factions that have sometimes become gospel over time. If it is not you, please read to understand why someone in your congregation might be inconsolable when the 'joyous' news of soteriological election is preached. \\r\\n\\r\\nThe Bible is clear: God is omnipotent and omniscient - sovereign - AND man is responsible for his actions. Both teachings are true even if irreconcilable in the human mind. Light and matter behave as waves or as particles depending on how you look - both are true and we work with that to learn more about our world rather than assuming we must skew our belief one way or the other or give up our God-given reason entirely. \\r\\n\\r\\n""""Love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength"""" is the biblical command. Logic and moral sense are surely part of that """"our"""" and abdicating from them, saying """"here they cannot apply"""" seems a slippery slope to relativism. \\r\\n\\r\\nFive stars.
