Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a pastor and theologian who faced the ultimate test of his Christian principles - would he risk his life to resist the brutal regime of Adolf Hitler? This is a stirring account of Bonhoeffer's commitment to Christ even in the face of danger and death. Ages 8-12.

Born into a loving family, Dietrich Bonhoeffer pursued a life as a pastor, teacher, theologian -- and spy. He spoke out about the trouble in Germany when Adolph Hitler came to power, urging the Christian church to rescue disparaged people groups and resist Hitler's evil empire.

Accused of being a troublemaker, Dietrich continued on fearlessly in the midst of wickedness. His work as a spy in the German resistance and participation in a plot to assassinate Hitler led to imprisonment and eventual execution. But the lesson of his life story remains: "Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act."

    Challenging politics

This book tackles the sometimes confusing issues surrounding the life and work of Bonhoeffer in times of turmoil in Germany during Hitler's reign. There is Christian inspiration from his life as well as an outline of historical events that are not so inspiring, and sometimes gruesome. It is made fairly clear that some of Bonhoeffer's motivation was from seeds of liberation theology and this may prove to be a little confusing for young readers. I would recommend a parent or teacher guide a young person through the reading of this book. Having said that, there is a wealth of informative reading here for anyone interested in Bonhoeffer.
