Reformed churches have always been interested in the covenant idea, first the covenant of grace in Christ, but also a covenant with Adam before sin, commonly called the covenant of works. But what the covenant of works really meant in the 17th century, when it became standard orthodoxy, is often very poorly understood today. That ignorance has contributed to modifications which are not always for the better.

Book on """"the covenant of works""""

This is a great little book on """"the covenant of works"""". It details the doctrine as it has come to be formulated in the reformed tradition from a historical theological perspective. Rev. Ward does a thorough research on the topic looking from the early development all the way through to the formulation in the WCF and beyond. He traces out the influential persons both in europe as well as in the new world who contributed to its development and explains the important teachings behind the doctrine. I found it especially helpful in clarifying to me how to understand what really happened in the garden with our first parents and the great deal of confusion there is in the reformed world as a result of the """"republication thesis"""". I would highly recommend the book because our author has a gift and ability to succinctly explain and summarize what others taught. It is fully indexed and referenced for those seeking to follow up on sources. I read it from a pdf electronic version but am glad that it has been updated and reformatted and available in print again.
