Since the twin towers crashed to the ground on 9/11 there has been no end to claims that religion 'is dangerous', 'kills', or 'poisons everything'. And if religion is the problem with the world, say the New Atheists, the answer is simple: get rid of it. But are things really...

Since the twin towers crashed to the ground on 9/11 there has been no end to claims that religion 'is dangerous', 'kills', or 'poisons everything'. And if religion is the problem with the world, say the New Atheists, the answer is simple: get rid of it. But are things really so straightforward? Tackling Hawking, Dawkins, Dennett, Hitchens, and a newcomer in the field - the French philosopher Michel Onfray - John Lennox points out some of the fallacies in the New Atheist approach, arguing that their irrational and unscientific methodology leaves them guilty of the very obstinate foolishness they criticise in dogmatic religious folks. Erudite and wide-ranging, Gunning for God packs some debilitating punches. However, it also puts forward new ideas about the nature of God and Christianity that will give Dawkins' best friends and worst enemies alike some stimulating food for thought.

    Outside the Atheist Box

Gunning for God by John C. Lennox is a very helpful scholarly book for the everyday person. In comparison with Richard Dawkins The God Delusion I was struck by Lennox' clear, logical approach. In order to understand and absorb the content, I read the tome in small doses over a number of months, particularly as I was at a disadvantage without any scientific background. Those with a good working knowledge of science will be able to read the book more quickly. While the book contains plenty of science that points the way to God's existence Lennox is certain we can't prove or disprove God using the scientific method. He approaches the God question through philosophy and history, which is similar to Peter Hitchens who says an appreciation of art provided him with more of a pathway to God than science. Lennox, a mathematician, deftly applies historical and scientific methods to test whether or not there is a God, in particular, the existence of Christ. If you're looking for a book to answer the atheists or one to make a friend think outside the atheist box, I highly recommend Gunning for God.

    Everyone should read it

Is science really the opposite of religion? Of course not, Christianity has been one of the biggest forces developing science. Atheists want to take on science, and use it to deny God's existence, and here we find a great scientist talking about God, defending Christianity. Great arguments, great answers.
