Humble Calvinism is both a helpful summary of what Calvinism is, and a helpful challenge to those who are convinced Calvinists. It calls us to hold Calvinism in our hearts, not just in our heads, so that we are humble and gracious as well as zealous for the truth, to the praise and glory of Christ and his church. Author Jeff Medders admits that he is quick to defend Calvinism, but often slow to humbly love Christians who take a different view. His warm-hearted, challenging (and surprisingly witty) book takes readers through the the five points of Calvinism, revealing that a true understanding has a humbling effect on our hearts, fueling a love of Christ and his people that builds others up, rather than tearing them down.

    Recommended for everyone

Whether you hold to ‘Calvinism’ or not, Medders provides a helpful reflection of the 5 points of Calvinism from Scripture while also critiquing and pushing back against a tendency within Calvinistic circles to “have not love”. He writes in a clear, humorous, and easy to read fashion which makes this book a helpful read for anyone.

    a much needed reminder

Medder's main point in this book is that Calvinism, properly understood, should cause one to be humble. 'Humble Calvinism', therefore, not only does not express an oxymoron, it is in fact genuine Calvinism. In light of the rise of New Calvinism (not too new, by now), this book serves as a much needed reminder for those who align themselves with the view. Medder's says that this book might help non-Calvinists to better understand the view; indeed, there is a short chapter introducing the key terms for those unfamiliar with the view. However, the introductory material is brief (of necessity, in a book this concise), and readers would benefit most if they have some familiarity with the relevant terms. Medder's writing is humorous and clear, which makes for an easy and quick read.

    Humility

All Calvinists should and must be humble because that is what the five points drive us to. They speak of God as the sovereign gracious God who chooses and draws unlovable sinners and keeps them to the end. We can never be humble enough and this book sends us back to the basics and ensures our thinking of them have this humble attitude.
