A beautiful story of love and patience

The movie does not give this story justice. Marty is ready to embark on an adventure with the man that she loves, however, he is killed suddenly soon after they arrive on their land in the wild west after being thrown from his horse. Marty is grieving and alone - what is she to do? She has no money to travel back East and she can't manage on her own with just a wagon and their few belongings. Enter Clark Davis, a widower with a young daughter, having not long lost his wife. He is struggling with managing his farm and taking care of a toddler. They both seem the answer to each others problems, or so Clark believes. He convinces Marty to marry him, in name only, so that she can live with him and look after his daughter and keep house, with the promise that come summer, he will buy her the necessary stage ticket home. Marty has no other option and the last thing she expects is for love to bloom between the two on them. A great start to a great series of books!

    Loved it

This is the first book in a long series and I think it's by far the best. The log cabin, the farm life, the cooking from scratch and handsewing their own clothes. All those elements of homesteading are so interesting, but the relationships woven through are another layer to enjoy.

    Beautiful novel

Janette Oke can always be counted on to deliver a beautiful faith-filled story and this one was simply amazing. \\nIt was beautiful and inspirational to see God working through and in the lives of Marty and Clark. \\nThe novel had me sighing with contentment and growing wistful as the book came to an end. I just couldn't put it down! The plot was nice and solid. The characters were all amazing and I loved all of them, including some of the secondary characters: especially Ma Graham and Missie. \\nOverall, I really enjoyed it and I HIGHLY recommend it!!

    Lovely read!

This is a lovely story, beautifully written and one that I have read several times. While the circumstances Marty finds herself in are totally foreign to the reader, the romance is convincing and the reader thoroughly sympathises with all the characters, they are all very well drawn. Highly recommend. An easy read.

    An Essential Read

Set in th 19th century, 19-year-old Marty is devastated when her husband Clem dies and leaves her stranded in the middle of the prairie. In her grief she finds herself agreeing to a marriage of convenience. Clark Davis needs a mother for his young daughter, Missie. Marty is hurt, confused, and angry, especially at Clark. I love this book, and could hardly put it down. Janette Oke's style of writing is captivating. I felt like I was right there with Marty.
