Voted one of *Christianity Today's* 1995 Books of the Year! This revised edition of the standard reference work in its field has been expanded throughout to now provide even more up-to-date information by Craig Keener, one of the leading New Testament scholars on Jewish, Greek and Roman culture. To understand and apply the Bible well, you need two crucial sources of information. One is the Bible itself. The other is an understanding of the cultural background of the passage you're reading. Only with the background can you grasp the author's original concerns and purposes. This unique commentary provides, in verse-by-verse format, the crucial cultural background you need for responsible--and richer--Bible study. It includes a glossary of cultural terms and important historical figures, maps and charts, up-to-date bibliographies, and introductory essays about cultural background information for each book of the New Testament. Based on ten years of in-depth study, this accessible and bestselling commentary is valuable for pastors in sermon preparation, for Sunday-school and other church teachers as they build lessons, for missionaries concerned not to import their own cultural biases into the Bible, for college and seminary students in classroom assignments, and for everyday Bible readers seeking to deepen and enhance their study of Scripture.

New Testament (2nd Edition) (Ivp Bible Background Commentary Series)$59.99
Helpful in personal bible study and preparing teachings or sermons. It goes in to depth in most of the passages. It's not my main go-to resource but an excellent one to have in addition to others.

Good background commentary
A good resource for sermon / teaching prep, as it will help you understand background knowledge verse by verse, and sometimes the author can provide us insights that we would not get if read it ourselves. However, if you are looking for the overall message of a passage, then you'd need other commentaries like Warren Wiersbe's. Also, some parts are very technical / hard to understand, that's why I give it 3 stars.

Great resource!
This is an excellent resource! It does not pretend to be a typical commentary, but focuses specifically on cultural issues. Keener shows the reader how the cultural situations existing in the day when NT books were written influence the content. It's very useful. When preparing a sermon, I often refer to this commentary before others, as determining the cultural background is important in the early part of sermon preparation. (eg. While recently preparing sermons on James, I found Keener's cultural insights helpful). I highly recommend it for preachers, Bible College students, and anyone interested in learning more about the culture of the NT era. \\r\\n

Excellent
This is a very good scholarly commentary in the historical context and very unique. The book is black cardboard hardback and has a sleeve jacket attached. Only down side is that it wont stay open by its self as its glue bound. Over all excellent for students and teachers and any who want a deeper understanding of the bible.
