Chesterton and friendship with J.R.R. Tolkien. Surprised By Joy: The Shape of My Early Life$19.99
I’m not sure why this book’s rated so highly. Being a C. S. Lewis fan, I was prepared to like it, but found it a slog. Apart from a handful of great insight, I found it a drudge. The first part of the book has some truly disturbing content (warning: paedophilic sodomy), & it doesn’t start getting good until the last 5 chapters. If you’re looking for his conversion, it’s not until the last 2 chapters & you may be disappointed by it. The book ends abruptly. If this weren’t our book for bookclub, I wouldn’t have finished it.

Fantastic Autobiography!
C. S. Lewis is such a classic and influential Christian author, I have read and loved many of his books. So I really enjoyed reading this autobiography of his! I think he's done an excellent job of balancing the story, as while the book mostly chronicles his journey to faith he also includes fascinating details of his life as a boy and young adult. As others have mentioned in their reviews, the language is of a high calibre and not what you'd find in your typical easy fiction read - but this is to be expected as C. S. Lewis is a British academic from the last century, so obviously he writes a little differently than perhaps us 21st century Australians are used to! :) \\n\\nPersonally I just think biographies are an invaluable type of literature for us to read. Being able to read about someone else's life is not only intriguing and entertaining, but also educational as we learn from others mistakes and successes. So I highly recommend Surprised by Joy to any Christian.

I enjoyed reading this book
I liked this book. It is different from the fantasy and story-telling books C. S. Lewis is known for, which shows his variety of talents as a writer.

Good but a challenge
Much as I love CS Lewis and appreciated hearing his journey to faith, I found this book a real challenge to read. It was fascinating to hear about his early years, school years, influential people in his life and what eventually led him to God but the language was so different from how we speak today that I found it really difficult to understand at times, having to read sections over and over to make sense of them. That said, if you have a scientific mind or enjoy the non-fiction writings of Lewis, you'll love this.
