REVIEWS
While new translations of the Bible are constantly appearing, with the vast majority only offering slight variations, Goldingay's translation here offers a fresh alternative, providing a rare glimpse into the language, culture, and worldview of ancient Israel. . . Everyone will love this.
- David T. Lamb, Professor of Old Testament, Biblical Theological Seminary, Pennsylvania

John Goldingay's translation is a magisterial work of theology, pastoral insight, and linguistic scholarship. . . It has immediately become one of the standard translations that I always consult when trying to understand any Old Testament text myself.
- Gordon McConville, Professor of Old Testament Theology, University of Gloucestershire

We hear the familiar flow of passages we know well, but with unexpected and arresting words that make us sometimes pause and think again. This is a book to browse in, alongside your customary Bible version, for fresh insights, challenge and enjoyment.
- Christopher J. H. Wright, International Ministries Director, Langham Partnership

This is a remarkable achievement. . . Tom Wright has a very attractive feel for English; and the mere fact of producing a fresh translation that is both scholarly and written in non-repellent language makes this work a major triumph.'
- Expository Times

Fresh, insightful and accessible. . . this translation directs the reader to new lines of thought and reflection, especially helpful with some of the best known and perhaps over-familiar passages. . . An excellent resource.
- The Reader

I love the easy flow of the narrative, and the way it is broken down into bite-sized chunks. . . This truly is a book for Everyone.
- The Good Book Stall

Why another translation of the Bible? As Tom Wright observes: `Translating [the bible] is something that each generation ought to be doing. Just as Jesus taught us to pray for our daily bread, we can never simply live on yesterday's bread, on the interpretations and translations of previous generations.'The Bible for Everyone is the result of a passionate conviction that scripture should be something that everyone can read, understand and enjoy. Not for everyone

This Bible is definitely not for everyone. For scholars, maybe, or people who know Hebrew. \\nIt was the description in the Koorong catalogue that made us keen to get this Bible, but I'm very disappointed with it and feel it wasn't accurately advertised. \\nI wrongly assumed that by 'The Bible for Everyone' it would mean easy for everyone to read or connect with and understand. . . maybe like 'The Message' but a little more formal. Instead, it is very hard to read and from the very first page I opened to, there was a grammar mistake. \\nProverbs 30:28 reads: 'You can take hold of a lizard in your hands, but it's in a king's palaces. ' This makes me assume that if there is a mistake the very first page I look at, there are bound to be others. \\nThe cover is bright and friendly, indicating it is a warm, easier read. However, the writing is very small for such a large Bible. \\nIt also uses what I assume are the Hebrew names for Bible characters. Eg. Numbers 28:1 'Yahweh spoke to Mosheh: Order the Yisrealites. . . . ' etc. \\nOne of the endorsements on the back says ''I love the easy flow of the narrative. . . ' however I personally didn't find it easy at all. \\nNot sure what I'll do with it now I have it. \\n

Excellent and refreshing. Just a few small dislikes. . .

Most Bibles have footnotes with alternative readings - this has none. \\nI think it's mis-named, because in the OT many proper nouns are transliterated rather than being in their more familiar forms. For example Tsiyyon (Zion) Ya'aqob (Jacob) Par'oh (Pharaoh) and Misrayim (Egypt). In the NT they're in their more familiar forms. This may be more accurate, but isn't so easy to follow. It should be called something other than 'The Bible for Everyone'. \\n(Wright wrote a commentary series 'The New Testament for Everyone' Goldingay the corresponding 'Old Testament for Everyone' and as part of that they did their own translations, which went into making this Bible, so that's obviously how it got its name)\\nThe paper is normal book paper rather than thin Bible paper, resulting in a chunky book. It's as thick as some Study Bibles. I wish they'd bring out a slimmer volume printed on Bible paper . . . and a Study Bible with notes by Goldingay and Wright. \\nThe translations themselves are refreshingly different to the more common translations produced by committees. Things that have become dulled by overfamiliarity sometimes have a new force. \\n\\nBook introductions, up to a page in length. More than 60 simple black & white maps distributed throughout (about half of them in Acts). Glossaries for the OT (12 pages) and NT (9 pages). The Tetragrammaton is 'Yahweh' rather than 'LORD' (and correctly so, in my opinion)\\nAs with most Protestant Bibles, this omits the Apocrypha.

Refreshing translation that preserves a lot of Hebraisms

Well laid out by SPCK, this combines both of the individual editions of the Old (I mean First) Testament and New Testaments previously released by Rev. John Goldingay and Bishop N. T. Wright. While not really suitable for liturgical proclamation, for private study and meditation, these translations really do help to bring the text of the OT and NT quite alive. I am particularly thankful for Rev. Goldingay's translation of the First Testament which I find to be much better to read than some other versions of Scripture that retain Hebraisms (I'm referring mainly to David Stern's Complete Jewish Bible when compared with this). Clean typesetting allows this edition of the scriptures to be read much like a novel meaning you can gulp down chapter after chapter with ease. Also very well priced considering the price of the individual editions alone
