**What is the relationship between sex and gender?**
- Understand society's shifts in thinking and talking about sex and gender - Discover how biological sex guides gender - Recognise how the Bible speaks to gender and transgender - Respond to affirming interpretations of Scripture - Answer gender confusion with clarity and compassion
In *The Body God Gives: A Biblical Response to Transgender Theory*, Robert S. Smith argues that God intends a person's gender to be grounded in the reality of his or her biological sex—the body God has given. In making his case, Smith critiques the central claim of transgender theory: that the sexed body does not determine the gendered self. He also evaluates contemporary changes in thought and speech about sex and gender, responding to modern confusion with biblical conviction and compassion. God speaks clearly, both in his word and in his world.

In this genuinely compassionate and deeply convictional work, Robert Smith offers a serious and thoughtful engagement with modern gender theory and transgender claims. Smith affirms the truth that both Scripture and Christian theology confirm that our Creator reveals our gender in our bodies. Christians will deeply appreciate his scholarship and his courage. —**R. Albert Mohler Jr.**, president, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary
The breadth of this book is stunning! All conclusions are biblically grounded, theologically sound, person affirming, and God honouring. *The Body God Gives* has my highest recommendation! —**Gregg R. Allison**, professor of Christian theology, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary; secretary, Evangelical Theological Society
This is an in-depth, fair-minded, and delightfully clear examination of contemporary trans and gender theories. There are no ‘straw men’ to be found here. That this book also includes a compelling account of biblical theological anthropology makes it a must-read for Christians who desire thoughtful and faithful engagement on these questions. —Abigail Favale, author of *The Genesis of Gender: A Christian Theory*

A solid defence of the enduring created order and the idea that sex determines gender
This is an impressive scholarly response to a pressing social issue. Robert Smith engages at length with theorists who argue in favour of divorcing sex from gender. He then summarises biblical scholarship on the topic. Finally, he examines key Bible texts, carefully refuting other scholars with whom he disagrees. Smith is thorough and comprehensive. While critical, he is also compassionate and fair. A solid and insightful defence of the enduring created order and the idea that sex determines gender. An evangelical response to transgender theory
I benefited from this carefully considered and detailed response to transgender theory from an evangelical perspective. As would be expected, Smith spends a lot of time in the first two chapters of Genesis, after engaging extensively with secular theorists on sex and gender. Through exegesis and theological reflection on Genesis, Smith demonstrates that “to be human is to be embodied and to be embodied is to be sexed,” and that it is the sexed body that signifies and determines the gendered self.
