The universal symbol of the Christian faith is neither a crib nor a manger, but a gruesome cross. Yet many people are unclear about its meaning, and cannot understand why Christ had to die.
In this magisterial and best selling book, John Stott explains the significance of Christ's cross and answers the objections commonly brought against biblical teaching on the atonement.
John Stott's modern classic is as sharp and pertinent as ever it was. It combines an excellent biblical exposition, and a characteristically thoughtful study of Christian belief, with a searching call to the church to live under the cross. 448 pages, from IVP. ***- Publisher.***
Recipient of a 1988 ECPA Gold Medallion Award! An Eternity 1987 Book of the Year! "I could never myself believe in God, if it were not for the cross ... In the real world of pain, how could one worship a God who was immune to it?" With compelling honesty John Stott confronts this generation with the centrality of the cross in God's redemption of the world -- a world now haunted by the memories of Auschwitz, the pain of oppression and the specter of nuclear war. Can we see triumph in tragedy, victory in shame? Why should an object of Roman distaste and Jewish disgust be the emblem of our worship and the axiom of our faith? And what does it mean for us today? Now from one of the foremost preachers and Christian leaders of our day comes theology at its readable best, a contemporary restatement of the meaning of the cross. At the cross Stott finds the majesty and love of God disclosed, the sin and bondage of the world exposed. More than a study of the atonement, this book brings Scripture into living dialog with Christian theology and the twentieth century. What emerges is a pattern for Christian life and worship, hope and mission. Destined to be a classic study of the center of our faith, Stott's work is the product of a uniquely gifted pastor, scholar and Christian statesman. His penetrating insight, charitable scholarship and pastoral warmth are guaranteed to feed both heart and mind.

Powerful book that delves into Christology with real revelation and insight. I definitely have a much stronger and whole understanding on the power of Christ and the Cross! A must read! Will say that it does use quite theological words and concepts, which might be hard for new Christians or people who are less academic to read. Nonetheless, a powerful book that sparked a passion for theology within my heart!

Read this if you want to stretch your understanding of the cross
I am blown away by what Jesus did for me on the cross after reading this book. I thought I knew enough to feel loved, but then I read this and it has totally stretched my understanding to a whole new level. It's a must read! (keep a dictionary with you when reading though)

Comprehensive and mind-blowing classic
This captivating work is one I have returned to multiple times over many years, to read in full or in part. Many of God's truths about the cross were revealed through this Stott's explanations of scripture. The cross is so simple, yet not simplistic, and there is much to be understood that many Christians likely have not yet been taught or not yet grasped. This book takes the reader through a journey of understanding the significance and implications of the cross to individuals as well as all humanity and creation.

This is a classic!
I read this book 20 years ago, and after all this years I still reading it. I recently brought the hard cover and use it in my bible study on the topic atonement. Stott words on the Cross always carry me up when I encounter spiritual depression. He is just a great gift to the church.
