The 2022 Australian Christian Book of the Year

Australian agronomists Tony and Liz Rinaudo arrived at the edge of the
Sahara in 1981 to plant trees. Few trees survived in the hostile terrain,
and those that did were cut down. While contemplating the futility of
their endeavours, Tony discovered an embarrassingly simple method of
restoring degraded landscape without planting a single tree.

Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR), the sustainable
system of land management that Tony pioneered, has revolutionised
reforestation across Africa and beyond. In Niger alone, local farmers
embracing FMNR have rehabilitated over six million hectares of ruined
land and doubled their crop yields and income.

Tony is a Right Livelihood Award Laureate and Principal Climate Action Advisor with World Vision.

A wonderful Christian biography as well as a planetary good news story

This story of a humble Melbourne agronomist, along with his also-agronomist wife (and their family!) is an inspiring missionary biography. But it is also a book for our times and for all people-Christian and not-who long to see us caring well for God's creation. The book brought tears to my eyes when I first read it.

    An inspiring and hope-filled autobiography

This is a beautifully told story of a humble-yet-remarkable Aussie who dared to make himself available to God. The way Tony Rinaudo's childhood questions - and frustrations - have been woven together to shape a life of sacrificial service provides compelling evidence of a God who is there, and who knows, sees and hears, and who has indeed planned good works for us to do in response to a world in need. \\r\\n\\r\\nThree of the best things about this book are its tremendous hopefulness, its relevance, and its timeliness. World leaders are now looking toward Farmer Manager Natural Regeneration (FMNR) as a potential game-changer in terms of it being an inexpensive and rapidly scalable method of alleviating extreme poverty and mitigating against biodiversity loss and climate change. This book tells the beginning of a much larger, unfinished story that continues to unfold around the world, transforming lives and landscapes and restoring dignity and hope for those most in need. \\r\\n\\r\\nHighly recommended reading for people of all ages!
